Diesel generator sets play a vital role as common backup or portable power sources in many situations. However, many people fall into certain misconceptions when starting a diesel generator set, which can not only affect its normal operation but also shorten its lifespan. 1)Neglecting Pre-Start Inspections
Many people neglect to inspect their diesel generator sets before starting them. In fact, pre-start inspections are crucial. Check the engine oil level to ensure it’s within the normal range; insufficient oil can lead to accelerated wear on engine components. Check the coolant level; insufficient coolant can cause the engine to overheat. Also check the fuel level and for any leaks in the fuel system. Furthermore, checking the battery voltage and ensuring all connections are secure are also essential steps. Ignoring these checks can lead to various malfunctions after starting, or even prevent the generator from starting altogether.
2)Direct Cold Start
Some users, for convenience, start their diesel generator sets directly when the ambient temperature is low, which is incorrect. In low temperatures, the engine oil viscosity increases, its fluidity decreases, and lubrication between components is poor. Directly starting the engine will increase starting resistance, overloading the starter motor and potentially damaging it. It will also accelerate wear on internal engine components. The correct approach is to preheat the generator set before starting, using methods such as hot water or electric heating, to raise the engine temperature to a certain level before attempting to start.
3)Multiple consecutive ignition attempts during startup
When a diesel generator set fails to start, some users may impatiently attempt to start it multiple times in an attempt to expedite the process. However, this is incorrect. Multiple consecutive ignition attempts will cause the starter motor to operate for an extended period, generating excessive heat and potentially leading to overheating and burnout. Furthermore, continuous ignition can cause fuel to accumulate in the cylinders, resulting in “flooding,” which makes starting even more difficult. Generally, the interval between each start attempt should be at least 15 seconds, and the number of consecutive attempts should not exceed three. If the generator still fails to start after three attempts, the cause should be identified and the fault resolved before attempting to start again.
4)Immediate Loading After Startup
After starting a diesel generator set, a warm-up period is necessary to allow all engine components to fully heat up and lubricate, reaching normal operating temperature and pressure before applying load. If load is applied immediately after startup, the engine will bear a heavy load before reaching its optimal operating condition, leading to incomplete combustion, carbon buildup, increased fuel consumption, and significant impact on engine mechanical components, affecting the unit’s lifespan. Generally, the warm-up time depends on the ambient temperature and generator set model, typically 3-5 minutes.
